Midsole width and toe box width explained

Platform width

Platform or midsole width is the width of the sole the foot lands on, measured at the heel and the forefoot. A wider platform resists tipping sideways, which is why tall, soft shoes often have wide bases.

Toe box width

Toe box width is measured inside the shoe and describes room for the toes. A shoe can have a wide platform and a narrow toe box, or the other way round, so look at both.

How they are measured

Both come from independent lab measurements in millimetres for a stated size, with their source on each shoe page.

Values on this site

  • Midsole width (forefoot) (mm): Width of the midsole at its widest forefoot point, as measured by a lab. The platform the foot lands on; says nothing about interior room.
  • Midsole width (heel) (mm): Width of the midsole at the heel, as measured by a lab.
  • Interior forefoot width (mm): Internal width at the widest forefoot point as measured by a lab ("width / fit"). A fit characteristic, not a platform measure.
  • Toebox width (mm): Internal width at the big-toe area as measured by a lab. A fit characteristic.

Questions

Is a wide platform the same as a wide fit?
No. Platform width is the outside of the sole; fit is about the inside, shown as toe box width.
